Keepers now come in two sizes: our original Essential Size, and the larger Passport/Phone Size  which fits a passport and your phone (yes, even the iPhone!) and has a larger rear ID window sized to hold a boarding pass, sports ticket, or convention badge.

This limited edition series began life as a bed covering in India. Brought to America by Ann, it served duty as a window dressing and has now been repurposed into this one of a kind collection.  Paired with a forest green batik and sewn by our Bhutanese crafters,  these beauties are PVC-free and available only at Mingei World Arts in Decatur, GA.

This summer Nicki Keyes runs a fantastic day camp program in Atlanta called Summer in the City. This Spring Nicki ordered matching Keepers for all of her Campers to wear in their travels around town. She has taken some great photos of the kids in their Keepers and has posted an article with darling pictures of them on her blog. She says,

The Keepers have been awesome!  I agree that not only do they send kids out with emergency contact intact, but it IS easier to spot them in a crowd. It’s been so helpful. The only problem I’m having is not having cards to give people who ask about them! People are asking all about them.

But are they organic? Actually, we do use organic cotton when we can find it in great prints that don’t look, well, crunchy.  However, Sustainable is a much broader measure.  It’s a measure of balance not only in terms of natural resources and the environment, but also of  community and economy.

We strive for Sustainability not just in the materials we choose, but in the method of our production.  We could ship our organic cotton overseas for manufacture and have it shipped back to achieve maximum dollar value, but does the carbon footprint of the transport offset the intent?  We feel it is also important to consider how the “human capital” fares in the equation — knowing first hand how the crafters are treated, and that we are putting their wages back into our local economy. 

As in the rest of life, Balance is the sum of our decisions. It’s not so easy as just saying “buy organic” or “buy American”. Their are plenty of products that are neither, yet the sum of their components leaves our world a better place.
